Reductil
Reductil is a medicine which is used in obesity. Reductil contains sibutramine hydrochloride. It is made by Abbott Laboratories Limited. In medical studies of overweight people Reductil along with a reduced caloric diet, has produced a significant reduction of body weight. Reductil works by suppressing the appetite whereby you feel satisfied with less food. You are not craving for food all the time.

History
The long-term effects of reductil on the morbidity and mortality associated with obesity have not been established. Sibutramine's effect on weight loss was examined in double-blind, placebo-controlled obesity trials with study durations of 8 weeks to 18 months and doses ranging from 1 to 30mg once daily.

Please read all of this leaflet carefully before you start taking Reductil. The other ingredients: In Reductil 10 mg and 15 mg: dimeticone, iron oxides and hydroxides, gelatin, colloidal anhydrous silica, indigo carmine, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium lauryl sulphate, shellac, soybean lecithin, titanium dioxide. Reductil 10 mg also contains quinoline yellow.
Obesity
If someone is obese, it means they are seriously overweight as a result of having too much body fat. In adults, the exact level of obesity is determined by reference to the Body Mass Index (BMI). A score of 30+ on the BMI indicates mild obesity. Types of severe clinical obesity include morbid obesity (BMI 40+) and malignant or super obesity (BMI 50+). At the extreme end of the scale is super-super obesity (BMI 60+). Child obesity is measured differently. It is based on BMI-for-age, and is assessed in relation to the weight of other children of a similar age and gender.

How reductil works
Reductil is the first orally administered serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitor to be used for the management of obesity. Sibutramine produces its therapeutic effects predominantly via its active secondary and primary amine metabolites which are inhibitors of noradrenaline, serotonin and dopamine reuptake. In human brain tissue, metabolites 1 and 2 are 3 fold more potent as in vitro inhibitors of noradrenaline and serotonin reuptake than of dopamine.
